Senate Refuses to Vote on Shaheen Amendment, So Rape Victims in the Military Still Can't Get Abortions

Women pregnant in the military can only use their insurance plans to receive an abortion if their lives are at risk. If they want an abortion for some other reason, even rape, they are denied insurance coverage. This is all despite the fact a woman's chance of sexual abuse doubles when she joins the military, and that people with federal insurance like Medicaid at least have access to abortion in instances of rape and incest. 
It's a ridiculous policy to force on women serving their country.  But after Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) introduced an amendment to the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act to lift the ban on rape and incest, Congress decided Wednesday not to vote on it and ruled the amendment "non-germane," according to theHuffington Post.    Read more
