Open Letter to Muslim Leaders on Imam Jamil Al-Amin

In the name of ALLAH, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful

RAJAB 1435 AH
(May 21, 2014)

An Open Letter to the Muslim Leaders of Washington, DC
(And Beyond)

“A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim, he neither oppresses him, nor does he fail him; he neither lies to him, nor does he hold him in contempt. The whole of a Muslim for another Muslim is inviolable: his blood, his property, his honor.” – Prophet Mohammed (saaw)

Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace):

As most of you are aware, while we have struggled to maintain our public concern and support for all of our political prisoners, the case that has received the lion's share of our time, attention, and limited resource over the past five years has been the plight of our sister-in-Islam, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. This open letter concerns an urgent and time sensitive mobilization for one of our brothers, Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin.

It has now been 14 years that Imam Jamil (the former H. Rap Brown) has been locked down without having had the benefit of a fair trial, he is now 70 years of age. During this period those who hold him captive have done so in a way that has been unprecedented, even for Muslim prisoners in a Post 9/11 world. While he is a state prisoner - having been tried and convicted (without the benefit of a fair trial) in a state court - he is confined in a federal supermax prison in solitary confinement!

The conditions of his confinement are troublesome on that basis alone; but this circumstance is compounded by a life threatening medical condition that Imam Jamil is currently struggling with; a condition compounded by what appears to be deliberate institutional neglect! As those who know Imam Jamil are well aware, he has a history of noble struggle in America that predates his embrace of Islam in 1971. After his Islam, the spirit of struggle that he was already known for achieved greater clarity and more principled focus – and those of us in America who knew him, benefited (by the grace and mercy of ALLAH). He now needs us – Muslims and non-Muslims who know and value his legacy of struggle!

On Tuesday, May 27, we are planning to hold a protest rally in front of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) headquarters located at 320 First Street, NW, Washington, DC 20534. It will be a 90 minute rally from 11:30 AM to 1PM. It would be greatly appreciated if the Muslim leaders of Metro-Washington, DC would endorse this initiative, and make a sincere effort to mobilize your respective constituencies to maximize support.

Insha’Allah, on that day we will be making two demands of the BOP leadership, led by its Director, Mr. Charles E. Samuels, Jr. – (1) immediate medical attention for inmate Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin (Reg.# 99974-555); (2) transfer to a different facility where his medical needs are more assured of being met, such as the prison medical facility located  in Butner, North Carolina.

This is our collective opportunity to help make a significant difference in the life of a man (and leader) who has given much to his communities. As this mobilization is coming a day after Memorial Day, and the conclusion of the ICNA-MAS Convention, we hope that those leaders (from other parts of the country) who are in a position to join us, will do so as well, insha’Allah.

With that said, we look forward to your positive response, insha’Allah.
